NOTE: Our handsome boy Chief is being fostered at Northwoods Animal Learning Center in rural Chetek Wisconsin, where he has learned to overcome most of his fears and is considered adoptable to the right family! At Northwoods they sometimes call him Schaeffer which really fits him. He is observant and intelligent and sensitive. Chief is a TOTAL LOVEBUG who wants tummy scratches, ear rubs, and nose kisses. He will be happiest in an outdoors-loving family that likes a variety of activities as he is an energetic dog, as are most hunting breeds. Chief likes to go biking and jogging with his peeps. He adores splashing around in the creek. He loves to play with other dogs and is good with cats indoors. He knows how to walk on a treadmill for exercise. He has learned a variety of commands that will help him learn your house rules. He is kennel trained. He loves to play with toys. We think he is a Black & Tan coonhound and Mountain Cur mix or perhaps a greyhound mix, as he is very tall, lean, and leggy. He does have the classic coonhound "hound-song" but he is actually rather quiet. Like all coonhounds and all hunting dogs, Chief looks to his human for leadership. When you take him on a walk, he watches you carefully for clues about when to change course. Chief must be adopted into a dog-savvy family as he has some issues considered to be manageable (no young children). He must be introduced carefully to new men. He should have his own indoor crate or kennel in a quiet area where he can feel safe. In the right family, he will be an unforgettable companion dog of a lifetime.
